I love this idea – I was introduced to it by my dearest friend Kate who organised my baby shower and gave out these little bun in the oven gifts to everyone who came. It was so sweet and would make a really cute gift for a Mama to be on Mother’s Day – especially if she has young children who can get involved in making them!

So all you do is choose a jar that you like and then pick any cake recipe and measure out the ingredients then add them to the jar. Print off some instructions and add them to a gift tag – Its that easy! You can get really creative and separate all of the ingredients to make the layer like in the picture, or you can just mix it all up together.

This is my favourite recipe for a Bun in the Oven, its for a Fudgy Snack Cake:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup bittersweet or semisweet chocolate pieces
  • 1/3 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 1/3 cup peanut butter-flavored, butterscotch-flavored or white baking pieces
  • 1/3 cup bittersweet or semisweet chocolate pieces

Layer up the ingredients however you think looks best, I mix the baking powder, baking soda and salt into the flour and make that all one layer – because there are some ‘pieces’ as opposed to just powders this one looks so cool if you save the pieces for the top, and alternate between flour and cocoa, and again with the sugars.

You will also need to add to your gift label 1tsp vanilla essence, 1 egg, 3/4 cup milk, 1/3 cup of butter. For the cooking instructions just bung it all into a big bowl and make sure it is mixed thoroughly. Cook at 350F for 35mins.

Enjoy!
