I’m not a ‘new’ mum and I’m not presently expecting, but my body is still very much defined by my pregnancies and my post-natal tummy is a little beach shy to say the least. I’m currently trying to shift the extra pounds I gained when I was pregnant with Edith by making healthier food choices and staying clear of the jaffa cakes, but the struggle is real. I’m sure I’m not alone.
Thankfully, this year’s swimwear trends are on my side, with the one-piece and tankini still firm favourites on the catwalk. Guess I’ll have to put my micro bikini back in the cupboard. They’re so last season, duh.
Instead of feeling insecure and comparing my soft tummy to celebrities with full time personal trainers and nannies, I’ve decided to embrace my current shape. It’s a reminder that I’ve grown life. I’ve carried children in this shell for 27 months and I’m tired. I’m allowed to be.
Everyone’s pregnant and post-natal bodies are different and it’s important to wear whatever makes you feel the most confident. Whether you’re back at your pre-pregnancy weight, about to pop, breastfeeding every 40 minutes or creeping into the plus sizes, there’s a swimsuit for you.
The faithful one piece
Oh how I rejoiced when these came back into fashion. The one piece is no longer a place to hide and gone are the days of frumpy, speedo numbers. From sassy and sweet floral offerings to chic and elegant cut-outs, no matter your size or body type there are plenty of styles that promise to make you feel beautiful and comfortable.
Bottoms up
High waisted bottoms have been around for a few seasons now, but along with the one piece they’re right on trend for summer 2017. From glamorous offerings straight out of the 1950s to flattering little numbers with a modern twist, these miracle pants are fantastic at covering that post-baby belly.
Teamed with a supportive halter top they’re a great option for breast feeding mothers and will not only maintain your shape, but provide easy and discreet access for those around the clock feeds.
Trendsetting tankinis
Tankinis are great for pregnancy, especially in the third trimester when your bump is getting bigger each and every week. Offering more comfort than a one piece and making trips to the bathroom just that little bit easier, if you’re self-conscious about stretch marks a tankini is your best bet.
There are so many on the market, from high waisted shorts and halter neck tops to string bikini bottoms and cute bandeau’s. Sainsbury’s have a great selection of affordable tankinis with fitted tops in their 2017 swimwear range – the spotty one in particular has caught my eye.
Accessorize
Accessor what? Long gone are the days when I have time to pedicure my feet or spend half an hour deliberating over which necklace to set off my outfit. When I do take a little extra care though, I certainly feel a million dollars. Grab yourself some gorgeous sandals or a trendsetting straw sun hat, disguise that cellulite with a self-tanning moisturiser and treat your lips to a slick of rosy red lipstick.
If you’re still feeling insecure, beach kimonos and sarongs are still all the rage and offer additional coverage should you need it. They’re also a godsend when breast feeding on the beach or by the pool, offering shade to your nursing baby.
