I’m in the very fortunate position to be spending Mother’s Day with my mum, and as such I won’t have to post her gift, but for those of you that do, how do you stop it from getting broken?

I mean, let’s face it, some of the best gifts are pretty breakable aren’t they? Make up, pretty teacups, candles and even jewellery are all ideal gifts for Mothering Sunday but without the right packaging they often arrive broken.

It isn’t just packaging the gift to keep it safe either, what about making it extra special for Mum by prettying it up? I’ve got some top tips for making your Mother’s Day gift extra special.

1.) Choose the right packaging.

Not pointing any fingers *ahem, amazon* but how often have you ordered something simple and found that it arrives in a box that could contain Shroedinger’s cat too? Yep, that DVD you bought for mum is going to be rattling around in that huge A4 box, meaning it’s more likely to get broken and pointlessly costing you more in wrapping paper and decoration. Try somewhere like Rajapack who have different shaped and sized cardboard boxes to help you cover a wide variety of gifts for mum.

2.) Bespoke Wrapping paper

Remember that picture that mum adores of you when you were 5 and trying to eat ice cream but ended up wearing more of it than not? Or the one she pulls out at every family get together that makes you cringe? Well, this isn’t about you, this is about saying thank you to mum is be prepared to swallow your horror and head to somewhere like Asda to get some specialised wrapping paper printed using that gloriously horrifying picture. She’ll love it and you can have a ceremonial burning after she’s unwrapped πŸ™‚

3.) Try Etsy for decorating and special paper

Special paper can really add to the whole fun of a present!

Etsy has a wonderful range of handcrafted wrapping paper and delightful washi tape, gift labels and ribbons to really make your gift look extra special. It can make all the different to receiving something that makes her smile to receiving something that she will remember and delight in. It doesn’t have to be expensive or over the top and depending on your gift you will have plenty left over to use again for birthday’s, Xmas and other special occasions.

4.) Washi Tape is under rated

Isn't this pretty? Simple and effective from MyCraftyNell via Etsy.

This has to be one of the most under rated tools for decorating a gift! Even the most mundane packaging is given a pretty lift by some beautiful washi tape – quite frankly, I’d be delighted with the washi tape as a gift because I love it!! If you have bought mum tickets to a concert, spa or something then washi tape makes a very pretty seal to an envelope.

5.) Don’t go over board

You don’t have to go crackers to make it special, the simplest thing will add that special touch. Washi tape, special wrapping paper, personalised wrapping paper will all look lovely, but not combined! Similarly if you have bought mum something she really wants and you want to throw her off the scent you could….

6.) Use a totally random box, in a box, in a box!

I know it’s mean. I do it to Adam all the time because his gifts are predicable and usually ticket or tshirt based, so I put a small box in a bigger box and throw him off the scent. If you’ve bough something mum has been after for ages, keep the anticipation going a bit longer with this trick.

I hope this makes for some creative Mother’s Day gifts – have fun!
