A fairy garden is so much fun in the spring and summer. It’s just such fun to make, so easy, uses all of the things you already have in the house and is genuinely fun for the rest of the summer!
We had so much fun making our own fairy garden after I saw this fab idea on pinterest, I think it’s one of the best garden activities for kids to have a go at. It was so easy to do and now every day the boys want to go out and see if the fairies have been or left anything! So I thought I’d put together a little how to of making a fairy garden, but I want to stress that you don’t have to use the same things as us, or even the same ideas, your fairy garden should be totally unique to you! Have fun!
What you need:
- A large bucket, plant pot, container, or anything that will hold your dirt.
- A bag of soil, sand, pebble (something to create a base with.)
- A bowl for a pool of water
- Twigs, pebbles, flowers, grass, anything that you want to use to decorate.
Here is what we did:
So first thing is first, we started by choosing our container and digging.
As silly as it sounds, digging in mud, making muddies and scooping up dirt has serious sensory benefits and is a great way to stimulate your child.
The boys had so much fun filling up the bucket. if you wanted to do this with sand, or pebbles then you could so easily.
Once we had finished with our base level of dirt, we decided that we would like to have some pebbles over the top of our diary garden for some “landscaping”. Roo used his trusty truck to carry the pebble from one side of the garden to the other!
We used an old wicker plant pot that was headed for the rubbish pile to cut up strips of wood to make our hut, bridge and bench. you could also use twigs, stones, rope, leaves… anything! (if you are pushed for time or not into making things like this, why not take a trip to the local pet store and buy a little house from the fish tank isle.)
This is the plant pot and the bridge. I tied string around the edges of the bridge, ready to balance across the pond.
We used a bowl to add some water, although I have seen it done in some fairy houses with plastic sheeting and pebbles.. it just depends on how far you want to go! We also added those pebbles and left a pathway down to the pond, added some plants too. We are going to replace these with edible plants that we are currently growing in the kitchen!
We added a bench – because its tough being a fairy. I also thought it would be a really sweet touch to add some of the tadpoles from Grandma’s pond to the fairy pond – they live perfectly well in here and will eventually develop and be happy to hope around the fairy garden for a short time.
We used the chopped up basket and some plant poles that we cut up. I also used some of the big pebbles that we have been collecting on our family days out and little weekend breaks. It made a really special addition to our garden.
