I am a sucker for the traditional and when I saw these beautiful hand crafted boats from French toy makers, Tirot, I had to share.
When I was a child, my dad had a huge wooden toy boat (well, it wasn’t a toy – it was decorative) that I absolutely loved. My Grandfather had built it years before and will never forgot how I would spend hours starring at it.
Toy boats are a wonderful traditional toy, something that all children can enjoy – forget the iPads. Tirot have been making boats for several generations in Brittany in the North West of France, and since 1946 they have been giving children the chance to play sailor, merchant or even sea God!
Each boat is handcrafted and takes hours of careful labour, not to mention the love that goes into the marvellous detailing such as the stitches on the sails. Not unlike my Grandfather’s creation. All of the boats have been weighted to sail beautifully (if you choose to do so) or you could even use them as decoration in any child’s bedroom.
